Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority
Drawing upon extensive environmental and recycling experience, TRG developed a comprehensive school recycling program for the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority and the 50 public and private schools within the district. TRG held the contract for 12 years, and earned the Authority a prestigious award from the CA Resource Recovery Association. Creating a comprehensive technical and educational program from the ground up, TRG was responsible for conducting waste audits, designing collection systems, tracking materials and costs, and evaluating vendors and markets. The success of each program has centered on education of the staff, students and school district employees. Each school was provided with free resources for teachers, signage for every classroom and recycling bins, as well as offered educational school assemblies and assistance with other school-related activities. TRG principal Lois Humphreys worked with student Green Teams and managed the Wastebusters certification program.

Wastebusters
The “4Rs” newsletter educates and informs teachers and administrators about the program, and spotlights successful schools, innovative events and strategies for more involvement. The 4Rs is distributed 2-3 times a year.
Newsletter
TRG designed a field trip to a local materials recovery facility and principal Lois Humphreys leads the tours. A Power Point presentation was created and an interactive and lively discussion of the 4Rs occurs at every field trip. TRG leads numerous classroom and lunchtime presentations to students, focusing on food waste, recycling, composting and other topics.

Getting kids involved is key to understanding their role in the cycle of waste, and to making the program successful. The volume of solid waste generated by the participating schools has decreased as the recycling has increased—and kids get to be a part of the process!
